My wife Paige likes to remind people that despite all the disruption Hurricane Ian has brought to our islands and our lives, I like to say that with each new day: we’re another day closer to normal. But it’s true, and it’s how we get to the positive and better-than-ever end of this journey. One day, one step at a time.
For example, our announcement to open ‘Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa February 1, 2023 to island residents and island workers seeking shelter — along with every vacation rental home we represent that desires and is capable of hosting people — was celebrated both on regional television and social media to the kind of enthusiasm that surprised all of us. While we were portrayed and even called out as “heroes,” we simply see it as our duty, responsibility and opportunity to help Sanibel and Captiva (and its people) heal faster. If you’re interested, you can view the news story.
Just as importantly, YOU can play a part and be a true hero to our islands and our recovery as well. All you have to do is complete a simple form at this link from the Sanibel Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce, and your request for both State of Florida and Federal assistance to our region will be heard by your local representatives in the United States Congress and Senate.
Here’s more great and heartwarming news! Our efforts to provide additional funding to assist Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts team members who were employed at the time of Hurricane Ian has now topped $75,000 — surpassing more than 50% of our original goal! A reminder: 100% of these proceeds go to every employee displaced by the hurricane — pool bar attendants, wait staff at Old Captiva House, front desk personnel, housekeeping, maintenance and many others. Our next goal? $100,000, and your generous gift can help us get there when you donate here.
Finally, on the lighter side, you can now bring a little bit of Sanibel and Captiva right to your home with our new, White Pelican online shop. We’re currently stocked with Branded Tumblers (that you can fill with your favorite beverage) and more items just as soon as possible. Shop till you drop here!
So as you can see, every day brings us “another day closer” to normal. And yes, as you’ve heard from us many times: Shouldn’t every day be this good?
Until next time,
Doug Babcock | Chief Executive Officer
